CRYPTO_free missing under RHEL

While trying to install hplib to control an HP Officejet J6400 under Scientific Linux (a flavor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux) I got the following problem:

checking for host machine platform... x86_32
checking for CRYPTO_free in -lcrypto... no
configure: error: cannot find net-snmp support (or --disable-network-build)

I installed the following libraries
net-snmp net-snmp-libs
crypto-utils
net-snmp-devel

but this did not solve the problem.

I finally solved it by installing
openssl-devel

Problems with Cycle king in Oxford?

I have heard several reports of people who had bought a bicycle from Cycle king in Oxford and suffered severe problems soon after their purchase.

In one case the pedal fell off the bike while the person was cycling a month after buying the bicycle, in another the chain broke three months after the purchase and in a third case the spokes of a wheel broke within a few months.

Luckily Cycle has been helpful to the customers in each case.

"Rsh to imap server timed out" with Pine/Alpine

The problem disappeared after setting the variable rsh-open-timeout= in ~/.pinerc to 0:

rsh-open-timeout=0

According to the Times Online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article4133633.ece
a researcher from Tsukuba has discovered an Algae than "sweats" crude oil.

Professor Makoto Watanabe claims that this Algae has an energetic yield much higher than what can be achieved with other plants used to produce biofuel. However some economic details still need to be worked out before the diesel produced by this algae can be massively produced.
